Better Than Onenote

Update: On November 4th 2019, Microsoft announced that it will extend mainstream support for OneNote 2016, reversing their earlier decision to stop adding new features to OneNote 2016. This means you can continue to use OneNote 2016 and enjoy the benefits of Onetastic for the foreseeable future. OneNote 2016's support dates are being aligned to that of Office 2019. Office 365 subscriptions are being also updates to include OneNote 2016 by default in the near future.

Jul 10, 2012 In OneNote for Windows 10 (9.20170.0), the application flashes a black screen each time the stylus (Surface Pen) makes contact with the screen. I have noticed that this happens only with the software's pencil writing tool and cannot reproduce it with the pen tool. Onenote shrinks the pages so much that the hundred of PDF pages fit on only one single A4 paper making it completely unusable. I really really would appreciate having proper page layout options in the touch version of onenote to set strict borders to have specific page size like A4 so that both the inserted PDF pages and my notes next to them. Nov 16, 2018 So for now, I always launch OneNote 2016 when I use OneNote if I am using a keyboard and mouse/touchpad (which is 99% of the time). Not only does it have more features, but I like the top-tabbed section interface much better than the side-tab design of the UWP version, which seems to eat up much more screen real estate (see the screenshots at.

Several months ago Microsoft announced that they will be focusing on the new Windows 10 app for OneNote and that they will not be adding new features to OneNote 2016. This left some Onetastic users wondering what will happen to Onetastic and whether they will be able to continue to use it.

The original announcement by Microsoft can be found here. Below is a part of the announcement regarding the support policy for OneNote 2016:

What’s happening to OneNote 2016?
While we’re no longer adding new features to OneNote 2016, it’ll still be there if you need it. OneNote 2016 is optionally available for anyone with Office 365 or Office 2019, but it will no longer be installed by default. If you currently use OneNote 2016, you won’t notice any changes when you update to Office 2019. We’ll continue to offer support, bug fixes, and security updates for OneNote 2016 for the duration of the Office 2016 support lifecycle, which runs through October 2020 for mainstream support and October 2025 for extended support.

Apps Like Onenote

Microsoft created a page with some frequently asked questions about this topic which you can find here.

OneNote Windows 10 app currently does not support add-ins. So we cannot develop Onetastic for it. OneNote 2016 will still be supported till 2025. It just won't get new features. We will continue to develop and support Onetastic as long as OneNote 2016 is supported by Microsoft.

So if you depend on Onetastic on OneNote 2016, you will be able to continue to use it for several years. In fact there are many Onetastic users who are still using OneNote 2013 or OneNote 2010. If you would like to transition to OneNote app for Windows 10 now, unfortunately you won't be able to run Onetastic on it. If Microsoft adds add-in support for Win 10 app it may be possible for us to develop Onetastic for it.

If you for some reason don't have OneNote 2016 installed on your computer but you are looking for a way to get it back, you can downloaded it using the instructions here.

If you’ve adopted OneNote as your note-taking program of choice, you’ll probably want to share or send a Notebook at some point. Luckily, OneNote makes this quite easy. I’ll note that the instructions below also apply to individual Sections in Notebooks! There is also a difference between sharing and sending–when you share a Notebook, you’re sharing a ‘living’ document that will always be up-to-date, while sending a notebook just sends a copy of a specific file.

Share a Notebook

Sharing a Notebook (or Section) allows you to share a ‘living’ document with people– depending on the permissions you set, users can either view or edit the document. To share a Notebook:
Right-click the Notebook and select “Share This Notebook”:
On the next screen, enter the name or address of the people you’d like to share the document with. You can set their permissions to either “Can edit” or “Can view” (this is easy to change later). Click Share when finished:

Send a Notebook (or Section, or Page)

To email a copy of a Notebook, we actually need to export it first. Select the Notebook you need (same as above), but this time, click on File:

Select Page, Section, or Notebook depending on your needs. I recommend choosing OneNote Package as the file type unless you know it won’t be used in OneNote:
Include it as an attachment in an email, and that’s it!
