- What video formats and resolutions can Viddly download and/or convert?
Viddly can download videos in resolutions up to 1080p in the Free version. In the Plus version, there is no limit on the resolution (YouTube currently supports videos up to 8K resolution). Furthermore, 360 and 60fps videos are also supported.
In addition, you can also convert the videos you download to MP4, WebM, 3GP and AVI. The conversion can either be done on-the-fly, or after you’ve downloaded the videos via the local file conversion feature.
- What audio formats and bitrates can Viddly download and/or convert?
Viddly can download audio-only version of videos in bitrates up to 128 Kbps in the Free version. In the Plus version you can get better quality audio with bitrates up to 192 Kbps.
You can also convert these to MP3, AAC and Vorbis. Similarly to videos, you can convert these on-the-fly, or after you’ve downloaded them via the local file conversion feature.
- Can I download YouTube Live Streams with Viddly?
Yes you can! In the Free version, you’ll be limited to 5 minutes. This restriction does not exist in the Plus version!
- How can I transfer downloaded audio or video files to my phone?
We recommend installing a cloud hosting service such as Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive on both your computer and your phone. This way, you can set your download directory to the cloud folder which will automatically synchronize any new files to your phone for maximum convenience.
- Why shouldn’t I use an Android or iOS app to download videos?
Google Play nor the Apple Store will ever allow any application that could potentially be used to download copyright-protected video or audio. As such, no publisher will be able to offer a functional app in either store for any significant amount of time. This implies that any app you might find in the store is a useless decoy created with the sole purpose of displaying ads to make a quick buck.

It’s not illegal to download videos for personal use. In some cases, it might also be legal to download videos for commercial reasons, as long as those reasons are covered by “fair use”. However, depending on which videos you download, you may be breaking YouTube’s terms of service.
Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc., 464 U.S. 417 (1984), a.k.a the “Betamax case”, was a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States ruling that the making of individual copies of complete television shows for purposes of time-shifting does not constitute copyright infringement, but is considered fair use.
The court stated: “When one considers the nature of a televised copyrighted audiovisual work and that time-shifting merely enables a viewer to see such a work which he had been invited to witness in its entirety free of charge, the fact that the entire work is reproduced does not have its ordinary effect of militating against a finding of fair use.”
Although there may be different interpretations, we believe that downloading content from video sharing website for the purpose of watching it at another time or on a device without an Internet connection has the same purpose as timeshifting and should, therefore, be considered fair use. As such, from a user’s perspective, downloading videos is entirely legal.
You should also be aware that the YouTube Terms of Service state “you shall not download any Content unless you see a 'download' or similar link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content”.
