Kena: Bridge of Spirits was a surprise reveal last year that caught the eye of many. At one point it was set to launch alongside Sony’s PS5, but in the end, it got a delay. We haven’t seen a lot from the game since its initial unveiling, outside some very nice screenshots here and there. While we still don’t have much footage, yet, we do have some details about how you’ll navigate through the world.

In the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine (February 2021), Ember Lab Co-Founder Josh Grier spoke about the game. He said they are looking at the game as ‘wide linear’. That means that while there is a set main path, and not really openly non-linear, there are things to explore to the side in some ways and different avenues of progression.

Maybe one of the most interest parts is Grier seems to indicate you can unlock your way forward multiple ways. Ones of the examples given are moving forward by either solving a puzzle or defeating a tough mini-boss in the way. It’s unclear how often you’ll get find yourself in that situation, but it sounds like a unique way to tackle progress, hopefully we’ll see more soon.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is currently slated to make its debut in time for the Holiday season this year. It will be coming to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Those who want it on PC will unfortunately have to get it from the Epic Games store, at least for a while. During Sony’s State of Play event on February 25, a trailer for Kena: Bridge of Spirits was shown that provides a closer look at combat and reveals the official release date of August 24.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits looks absolutely gorgeous with the trailer opening on a tranquil forest scene with a cute little spirit holding a leaf before plopping down and approaching Kena.

According to the trailer description, these spirit companies are called the Rot and in the trailer, we learn that they’re usually timid but seem to be fond of Kena as several can be seen encircling here and bouncing around.

The trailer provides some story information as well, with Kena visiting the village with the cute little Rot spirits looking for passage to the Sacred Mountain Shrine.

Kena is asked to help trapped spirits who linger in the area, as doing so is the only way she’ll be able to reach the Sacred Mountain Shrine. Combat is also shown in the trailer with Kena facing off against a masked enemy, while several other enemy types are shown.

It seems like Kena will have the ability to dodge roll out of harm’s way, strike foes with her staff, activate the staff’s abilities for ranged attacks, use the staff like a bow, use a spirit shield that forms a protective bubble around Kena, and recharge through meditation.
